| The Ghibli Museum

The Ghibli Museum exudes the same charm that you pick up from watching the fantastic (and world famous) films produced by the studio of the same name: Studio Ghibli. Three stories high and very maze-like in its construction, the museum's main focus is the world of animation, and its many rooms plastered with sketches and backgrounds done by the studio's staff take visitors through the many steps of making an animated film from start to finish. Unlike most museums, many of the displays - such as a replica of the famed director Hayao Miyazaki's own work desk - are not even behind ropes or glass. With raw sketches right before you, you get a sense of immersion that can't be found in other museums. Of course, you're still not allowed to touch anything - but you can get so close you can almost smell the paint right on the page.
There are also many cool diorama displays that showcase many of the tricks used in making animation. Using the universally appealing characters and designs of the various Ghibli worlds, these displays give everyone a behind-the-scenes look into the magic of animation.
There's also a giant cat-bus, as seen in My Neighbor Totoro. Unfortunately, you can only go inside the bus if you're an elementary school student, but even just watching kids playing around on the cat-bus from Totoro is enough to crack a big smile.
Also not to be missed are the special short films that you can only see there at the museum. Six films are cycled throughout the year, so there's a new one almost every time you go. You can't see the films anywhere else in the world, which means ultimate bragging rights.
