For a couple of years now, the secret has been fairly well-kept: Nakano Broadway is the budding child of Akihabara. Nakano Broadway is found in the town of Nakano, which is itself a straight shot west only one station away from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo Line. The area is far more low-key than the boisterous, loud, and tourist-heavy Akihabara. But don't let the casual atmosphere of Nakano throw you off. Nakano Broadway is very much a haven for the same breed of fan you'll find in the much-heralded anime/game/manga mecca of Akihabara. This is true even more so recently due to the rapid commercialization and modernization of the Akihabara area. Nakano Broadway is still a hidden treasure trove of figures, cosplay items, second-hand manga, capsule toys - an endless list of all the same great items you'll find in Akihabara, often even better.
Spanning three stories from the ground up and one basement level, Nakano Broadway houses multiple branches of the the anime goods store Mandarake, as well as stores selling cosplay items, clothes, games, appliances, electronics - everything. There are also arcades if you want to get in a few rounds of fun between shops, and plenty of food options if you want to get your eat on.
The town of Nakano itself is quaint considering its proximity to the bustling Shinjuku area. Nevertheless, it's home to great food, fashionable (and affordable) clothing stores, and a lot of great people. What's not to love?
